EPRA Shuts Down Ten Petrol Stations Over Adulterated Fuel in Nationwide Crackdown

Motorists across the country have been cautioned to remain vigilant after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced the closure of ten petrol stations found guilty of selling adulterated fuel. The crackdown follows a three-month inspection exercise carried out between July and September, targeting petroleum sites suspected of breaching compliance standards.

According to EPRA, a total of 6,090 tests were conducted at 1,315 stations nationwide. Of these, 1,303 sites were found to be compliant, while 12 failed quality checks. Ten of the non-compliant stations have since been shut down, with the remaining two under review.

The closures spanned several counties. In Kisumu, inspectors uncovered diesel adulterated with domestic kerosene and export fuel. In Mwala, Machakos County, and in parts of Makueni, stations were flagged for selling diesel with high sulphur content mixed with export fuel. In Bungoma’s Chwele area and in Vihiga County, stations were shut down for allegedly selling diesel meant strictly for export.

Elsewhere, in Nyandarua’s Miharati and in Kikambala, Kilifi County, inspectors found fuel with dangerously high sulphur content. Additional cases in Meru and Mombasa revealed stations selling domestic kerosene adulterated with non-market fuels.

While confirming the closures, EPRA also announced that a previously penalized station in Nakuru had been reopened after paying a fine of Ksh102,400 for selling high-sulphur diesel. The regulator emphasized its commitment to continuous monitoring of petroleum products across the country to protect consumers.

“The Authority maintains a hotline number, 0709 366 000, operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities,” EPRA stated. “Members of the public are requested to report cases of petroleum fuel adulteration or export dumping.”
