The Matungu and Kabuchai by-elections are currently underway in Kakamega and Bungoma counties respectively. On Thursday morning, former Sports CS Rashid Echesa was caught on camera physically assaulting IEBC officials presiding over the Matungu by-elections, an incident that has outraged Kenyans social media users.
Echesa is one of the agents of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), whose candidate is Alex Lanya. A win in Matungu would be very critical to the Ruto camp, considering the mini polls are an acid test to the outfit’s popularity in Western Kenya.
Other candidates are ODM Party’s David Were and ANC Party’s Peter Nabulindo ,Charles Kasamani (United Democratic Party), Paul Achayo (Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) and Faida Auma (Maendeleo Chap Chap).
Matungu constituency’s 62,386 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots today as they elect a new MP. The constituency has five wards namely Namamali, Koyonzo, Mayoni, Kholera, and Khalaba with a total of 116 polling stations will be used in all five wards.
