In ODM Party’s 20 years of existence, the Abagusii, despite their ‘multi-bet’ politics, have gained immensely from ODM with many leaders coming to parliament, EALA, county assemblies as well as joining govt whenever Raila Odinga created ‘panya routes’ to sirkal.
The Abagusii are being fed Gachagua’s toxic Kikuyu tribalism but they better not buy it.
By dint of geography and history, the Abagusii’s best bet are with their neighbours than their distant cousins. On account of commerce, again, the Abagusii should reject the invitation to display hostility to the Luo.
If you collate the last 20 years, in spite of ODM not capturing the ultimate power, the party has been gracious enough to fill its core positions with members of the Abagusii, many who rarely come out to promote the party, and who exit at the slightest chance at self-advancement.
In the 2022 polls, the Abagusii’s multi-bet politics ensured they benefit from the harvest of the two large parties in competition — ODM and UDA — which gave them slots that otherwise they wouldn’t have bagged had they dug themselves in a fringe party.
It is a good thing to ‘hope’ but a Kalonzo-Matiangi ticket or a Matiangi-Kalonzo ticket cannot beat President Ruto, when backed by the behemoth ODM.
That WANTAM voyage is doomed to existentially consign the Abagusii to the basement of history.
Dr. Matiangi should contest Nyamira Governor on ODM ticket in 2027 and have a front-line chance in 2032.
If he goes ahead to re-experiment Nyachae 2002, the outcome will be the same.
Remember if not for the post-2002 fallout in government that pushed the Luo out, Nyachae’s political error would have kept the Abagusii out of govt, which is unnecessary.
The Luo have learnt their lessons and there’s no guarantee that we will exit government in 2029 to create space for you, as we did in 2004, just a year after forming government.
The best pathway for the Abagusii is to join their neighbours, so that we win power together and stay in it together, as now.
