Court reverses President Uhuru’s transfer of KMC to the military

Justice Anthony Mirima sitting at the High Court in Nairobi has reversed a decision by President Uhuru Kenyatta to hand over the operations of Kenya Meat Commission to the KDF.

In his orders, Justice Mirima gave the Ministry of Agriculture and Attorney-General 90 days to regularise the transfer of the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) to the military.

“This court declares the decision constitutionally infirm. The decision is hereby quashed,” Justice Mrima ruled on the case filed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on behalf of the public.

Early last year, President Uhuru in an Executive Order reassigned the KMC from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Defence, after the corporation fell into financial turmoil.

The Athi River-based plant was slaughtering 200 cattle per week before the KDF take-over, despite it having the capacity to process the same number of animals per day.
