Charles Owino has revealed the National Police Service intentionally employs Kenyans who scored below C+ in their KCSE. The Police Spokesperson was speaking on Wednesday, during the Day Break Show, where he said highly educated police officers ask for promotions once they get their Degrees.
”We have a challenge when we employ every policeman with Grade C+ and above. They go back to school, get degrees and come back and ask for promotions. It is important we get officers who have C plain, C – and D+,” Owino told Citizen TV journalist Trevor Ombija.
Three weeks ago, the National Police service kicked off the recruitment of 5,000 new officers in centers countrywide, three years after the last recruitment exercise. The new recruits will consist of 4700 constables and 300 cadets.
The police spokesman has also defended the force from claims of being used to settle political scores, and intimidate political opponents. Politicians, led y Deputy President William Ruto and his allies have accused the police of being used by senior government at Harambee House to intimidate leaders perceived to be anti-Uhuru in the ruling Jubilee party.
”We don’t need to take instructions from anyone when doing our job; not even the Cabinet Secretary or the President. Every time we undertake our duty, we do it within the law.”
