He is notorious for sponsoring regime changes across the globe and has been one of the most prominent figures financing Kenyan civil society and human rights groups through his Open Society Foundations. Hungarian-born American billionaire and philanthropist George Soros has reportedly thrown his weight behind Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
According to sources within the civil society and judiciary, Ruto was linked with Soros by former members of the civil service currently in the Hustler Nation. The philanthropist is said to have identified with the DP’s political cause and for his support, Ruto’s camp has assured the Open Society it will be defending the Judiciary and supporting a number of human rights organizations currently financed by Soros.
To win Soros Open Society Foundation’s heart, the DP has grown bold, publicly defending the Judiciary against excesses of the Executive. Two weeks ago at the Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu, the DP called on leaders to respect the Constitution as well as the Judiciary, remarks he repeated two days ago in Kangundo, Machakos County.
Of late, allies of the DP have been defending independent institutions from state interference, and most of the time taking positions alongside the civil society. This publication has established a decision to work closely with members of the civil society as part of the deal with Soros.
In the elections of 2013 and 2017, the Open Society and George Soros was accused of financing activities of the Opposition and subsequently the candidatures of Raila Odinga in the two general elections.
