Kalonzo Musyoka has come out to declare that despite the High Court ruling which confirmed Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment both in Parliament and the Senate, their big boy Riggy is still able to run for the presidency come 2027.
Kalonzo Musoyka is a lawyer and a Senior Council for that but sadly he has never gone to court to practice law all his life.
He was too busy in the Moi government, so Gachagua may need a more qualified and experienced lawyer to help him navigate his political ambitions after the impeachment ruling.
On the political side of things, Kalonzo is creating a timebomb that could explode in his face in a few months.
Rigathi Gachagua after the court ruling declared he is taking a 45 day break so that him and his advisors and the United Opposition can pick up the presidential candidate to face Ruto in 2027.
Kalonzo Musyoka wants that United Opposition ticket really badly at this time which is his last chance.
Rigathi Gachagua would love nothing more than to be the one facing William Ruto so he can have his revenge on him and discipline him later.
From Kalonzo’s statement he cannot turn around when the United Opposition is picking their candidate to claim that Gachagua is not legible.
It may very well create a situation where Gachagua and Kalonzo are fighting each other for the ticket and never mind where the likes of Fred Matiang’i and Martha Karua will go.
The other real tough thing there for the United Opposition is that if Rigathi Gachagua is picked by the members of their teams as the right candidate to face William Ruto, the likes of Kalonzo will have no choice but to support him and wait for the IEBC to decide if Gachagua is legible.
If the IEBC throws Gachagua out because of the impeachment the United Opposition starts from scratch and that will be 1-2 months before the election.
Mike Sonko faced that exact same problem in 2022 when the IEBC told him as an impeached governor he could not run for any public office.
By the time the IEBC made that ruling it was too late for him to make any alternative arrangements.
That is what is going to happen to Gachagua and Kalonzo in June 2027 just before the presidential and general elections.
Incidentally the biggest supporter of Sonko who wanted him to run for Mombasa Governorship at that time was Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka who believed that the Kamba vote in Mombasa would help his buddy Sonko win the seat.
Is this a blood trail in Kenya politics for some politicians who just grasp on wishful thinking and turn that into their main agenda? That is a dangerous thing to do in politics.
In the Sonko case the IEBC made the final ruling towards the end of July 2022 and the election was less than two weeks away from that time. That may very well be what happens to Rigathi Gachagua in 2027.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre in Karen on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the former vice president dismissed claims that Gachagua can no longer vie for office, arguing that those making such assertions are misleading themselves and the public.
“Those who are saying that Riggy G can’t vie for office, they are misleading themselves,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo also poked holes in the recent ruling by a three-judge bench that upheld the Senate’s decision to impeach the DCP leader. He questioned how the court could uphold the impeachment while at the same time finding that Gachagua’s rights had been violated and that he was not accorded a fair hearing.
According to Kalonzo, that finding alone should have been sufficient grounds for the court to nullify the impeachment. He argued that under Article 25(c) of the Constitution, the right to a fair hearing is sacrosanct and cannot be limited or infringed under any circumstances.
The Wiper leader maintained that once the court established that Gachagua’s right to a fair hearing had been violated, it should have moved to overturn the impeachment process altogether.
Wamalwa defends Gachagua
On the other side, Democratic Action Party (DAP-Kenya) party leader Eugene Wamalwa dismissed the notion that the ruling had sealed Gachagua’s political future or condemned him to political irrelevance. He argues that the ruling has instead awakened the second deputy president instead of sending him into political oblivion.

According to Wamalwa, the judgment has instead awakened the former deputy president and positioned him as a key player in the run-up to the 2027 general election.
“And those saying that Gachagua has been finished – he has now become stronger politically.”

The real truth that opposition leaders cannot talk about because of their fear of Gachagua is that the United Opposition leaders are super excited that the High Court told Gachagua that he is better off in Wamunyoro herding sheep and eating a lot of food than being anywhere near State House.
