Kalonzo explains absence of Gachagua, Karua and Matiang’i at his campaign launch
The so called United Opposition is still trying to figure out what to call themselves and that seems to be a lot of work for them.
Today they are the Alternative Government. Tomorrow Kalonzo has his Komboa Kenya political party from a man who has been in government for 40 years and now he wants to Komboa Kenya from himself and his failures in government.
One thing is obvious for the opposition today and that is the fact that Kalonzo Musyoka is going to run for the presidency whether Gachagua supports him or not. The man is 72 years old and will be 78 years old in 2032, so this is his last hope.
Gachagua will also nominate himself for the presidency after the High Court confirms his impeachment in the ruling coming tomorrow June 8, 2026. The man will appeal to the Court of Appeal and later to the Supreme Court and declare that he is eligible to run until the Supreme Court makes a ruling on his impeachment.
That case will go on until next year so Gachagua will be in the race until the IEBC throws him out telling he cannot even be a village chief after the impeachment which will be just before the elections in 2027.
By that time there will be three opposition presidential candidates including Martha Karua. Nobody knows where Fred Matiang’i will end and that includes him and his godfather Uhuru Kenyatta.
“If the three judges rule that we were treated unfairly and against the law and the Constitution and lift the impeachment, we shall be grateful to God and we shall be very grateful that there is a justice system in Kenya that works.”
Gachagua said he believes the judiciary will make an independent and impartial decision based on the Constitution and the law.
“I have confidence that our judiciary is independent, is impartial, and will give justice to Rigathi Gachagua and millions of his supporters across the country,” he said.
However, he stated that a ruling against him would not mark the end of his legal battle.
“If the ruling goes the other way, it is still okay. We still have an opportunity to go to the Court of Appeal and follow the legal remedies that have been provided by the Constitution,” he said.
His remarks are consistent with positions he has maintained in recent weeks. During a television interview earlier this month, Gachagua said he was prepared to pursue the matter through the Court of Appeal and, if necessary, the Supreme Court in a bid to challenge the legality of his removal from office
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has explained why his fellow United Alternative Government co-principals were absent during the launch of his presidential campaign platform.
The Wiper leader dismissed speculation of divisions within the opposition alliance.
Speaking during the unveiling of his flagship presidential agenda, Kalonzo said he deliberately chose not to invite fellow co-principals Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i and Martha Karua as he wanted first to establish and launch his own campaign platform before bringing them together for future engagements.
The Wiper leader used the occasion to reassure supporters that the opposition coalition remains united and focused on its mission of challenging President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Allow me to salute my co-principals in the United Alternative Government and to thank them sincerely for standing together as a strong team which has sworn to stand with Kenyans,” Kalonzo said.
He added: “This team, I can assure you, will stand together until we liberate this country.”
Kalonzo revealed that he had considered inviting the three leaders to the launch but ultimately decided against it for strategic reasons.
“I actually had to debate on whether to invite them, Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i and Martha Karua, but I said maybe when I have sorted this issue of the flagship. But for now, I know they are all watching,” he said.
The former Vice President described the opposition team as a formidable political force and dismissed claims that differences among its leaders could derail its plans ahead of the next General Election.
“It is a wonderful team. We know that the Kenya Kwanza administration’s only hope is that the United Alternative Government will split,” he said.
Kalonzo argued that the coalition’s strength lies in its unity and common objective of offering Kenyans an alternative leadership vision.
According to him, attempts to portray cracks within the alliance are aimed at weakening the opposition’s growing influence across the country.
“Without any split, I can assure you that William Ruto is a one-term president,” Kalonzo declared to applause from supporters.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity and growing speculation over how opposition leaders will approach the 2027 presidential race.
While each of the coalition principals has continued to build individual political profiles, they have repeatedly maintained that they remain committed to working together under the United Alternative Government umbrella.
The launch of Kalonzo’s presidential platform marks the latest step in preparations for the 2027 contest, with the Wiper leader positioning himself as a key challenger to Ruto while emphasizing that opposition unity will be critical in determining the outcome of the election.
The other question is where do all these moves leave the Edwin Sifuna and his Linda Mwananichi group. Could Sifuna be a DP candidate to Kalonzo, Gachagua or Martha Karua and of course there is Fred Matiang’i for their team to join.
Maybe the poor guy will just have to fight to keep his senate seat in Nairobi against opposition candidates that he doesn’t know yet. Politics sometimes is madness and I am sure Sifuna knows that very well.
