Kenya Reverses Policy, Medal-Winning Athletes to Fly Business Class After Public Outcry

In a swift policy reversal, Kenya’s medalists from the World Athletics Championships will now travel in business class following public uproar over the treatment of Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir.

The controversy erupted on Tuesday when Citizen Digital shared a video showing Jepchirchir—fresh from winning the women’s marathon gold medal in Tokyo after a thrilling duel with Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa—seated in economy class on her flight home. The image sparked outrage among Kenyans, who accused Athletics Kenya of disrespecting national heroes who continue to elevate the country’s reputation on the global stage.

Amid the backlash, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports swiftly announced new travel arrangements. Evans Achoki, the Secretary for Administration at the State Department for Sports, confirmed that all medalists will now be flown in business class.

“The travel arrangements have been done and we intend to fly all the medalists in business class… so that they can be rewarded for their good performance, and we believe this will motivate them to work harder,” Achoki said.

The ministry’s move is widely seen as a direct response to mounting public pressure and a recognition of the immense prestige Kenyan athletes bring to the nation. For decades, the country’s runners have dominated global competitions, particularly in long-distance events, solidifying Kenya’s place as an athletics powerhouse.

Critics had argued that economy-class seating for world champions was not only humiliating but also detrimental to athletes’ recovery after grueling competitions. By ensuring upgraded travel, the government aims to not only honour the athletes but also signal a commitment to improving their welfare.
