Wiper Party has dismissed reports that its leader Kalonzo Musyoka has agreed to deputise Linda Mwananchi party’s Edwin Sifuna in 2027.
Party spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru, in a statement issued on X on Monday, clarified that the former VP had only committed to supporting whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the Alternative United Government coalition.
“Our party leader, just like the other principals, merely acknowledged that he will support whoever is nominated under the Alternative United Government as its presidential flag bearer,” Njiru said in the statement released hours after Kalonzo’s television interview.
The clarification follows remarks made by Kalonzo during a Monday television interview in which he was asked about the possibility of supporting Sifuna for the presidency.
When pressed on whether he would accept a running mate position under Sifuna, Kalonzo did not reject the possibility outright but indicated that the decision on who would lead the opposition formation would be complex.
The comments sparked immediate speculation across political circles that the veteran politician could be warming up to a deputy presidential role if Sifuna secured the coalition’s ticket.
However, Njiru moved swiftly to quash the interpretation, terming it misleading.
“Therefore, it is misleading to interpret his remarks as an indication that he has agreed to deputize anyone,” the spokesperson said.
The Alternative United Government brings together several opposition parties positioning themselves as the main challenge to the ruling Broad-Based Coalition in 2027.
The question of who will carry the coalition’s presidential standard remains unresolved, with multiple principals eyeing the top seat.
