1 min read

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has issued a directive for the immediate inspection of all public and private dams, as well as water reservoirs across the country within the next 24 hours.

Kindiki stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “To mitigate further loss of life, County Security and Intelligence Committees (CSICs) across the country are directed to immediately inspect all public and private dams and water reservoirs in their jurisdictions within 24 hours effective at 1400 hours today.”

The government is taking swift action to prevent additional loss of life and property resulting from the ongoing floods, which have already claimed 103 lives.

Kindiki’s directive also includes the arrest of individuals exploiting the situation for profit by transporting people across flooded areas in unsafe vessels. Speaking on the matter, Kindiki emphasized, “Arrest inexperienced and unscrupulous persons taking advantage of the prevailing situation to cash in on persons in distress.”

Efforts are underway to coordinate search and rescue operations with the National Police Service, Kenya Red Cross, and the Kenya Coast Guard Service.

The government has deployed all available resources to address the flood situation and ensure the safety of citizens. County Security Teams are working in collaboration with County Government officials to facilitate the compulsory evacuation of individuals at risk.
