UDA Crumbling as Sakaja Eyes ODM Ticket

1 min read

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has openly declared his intention to defend his seat on an ODM ticket, signaling a major blow to UDA and President William Ruto.

His move confirms growing disillusionment within UDA, even as its own leaders seek alternative political homes. If the ruling party were still strong, Sakaja—and others quietly reconsidering their loyalty—would not be looking elsewhere for survival.

Ruto’s increasing frustration reflects UDA’s decline, with internal divisions and unfulfilled promises pushing members away. His growing political outbursts suggest an attempt to mask the party’s crumbling support, particularly in urban areas where discontent is highest. With leaders like Sakaja jumping ship, it’s clear UDA is losing its once-strong grip.

While Sakaja’s shift benefits ODM, it also exposes Raila Odinga’s weak nomination process, where financial muscle often outweighs merit. If Raila hands Sakaja the ODM ticket without scrutiny, it could spark internal tensions, alienating long-time party members.
