The Unholy Trinity: How Mategwa, Marangu and Marube are Killing the Sacco Sector in Kenya

6 mins read

The cooperative sector in the country supports 7.8 million hustlers, mama mbogas and low income earners.

In a blatant attempt to undermine the efforts of His Excellency President William Ruto, the unholy quadrality four men have over the past three years set out to milk the sector dry, collapse vibrant saccos, dance on their graves and feast of their rotting flesh like vultures.

Saccos contribute in excess of 45% to Kenya’s GDP but the unholy alliance that is led by David Mategwa, the arch bishop of corruption, deputized by Patrick Kilemi, the high priest of corruption Daniel Marube and their masters Vincent Marangu and Macloud Malonza are firmly asleep on the steering wheel of an unmanned vehicle that will soon crash, killing employment opportunities (directly and indirectly) to over 2,500,000 people in Kenya who depend on saccos.

After months of investigations, our writer came across worrying cases of unethical practices, shocking cases of sexual exploitation within the sector and unbelievable gravy train of graft where billions have been lost and Sacco coffers will soon remain empty.

David Mategwa. The class 6 drop out who heads the police Sacco has had his dirty paws holding a firm grip on the sector. So corrupt is the man and he has never heard the term ‘conflict of interest’ that he holds senior positions as a delegate of Coop Bank, CIC Insurance, Cooperative Alliance of Kenya, ACCOSCA while still the chairman of Police Sacco where he is paid Sh 1 million every Friday.

His academic qualification is nonexistent and he had earlier on been fired from Kuscco Board for forging academic papers. Court papers to that effect are available. He was heard bragging at AVFitness Gym in Valley Arcade that he his academic qualifications don’t matter since most cops don’t go beyond class 4 and yet he reached class 6.

So crass is the man that he loudly revealed to members of his gym that he is the one who bribed legislators to pass the vetting of the new police inspector general Douglas Kanja, claiming police are so cheap and hungry that he gives all the 6 top police bosses a paltry Sh 50,000 every week to let him keep his post at Police Sacco.

Recently, without due process or any regard to procurement rules, he sold 28 4WD KUSCCO vehicles, worth Sh 140m for a paltry Sh 28 million and pocketed the difference.

He is also in the process of selling KUSCCO headquarters and the 2 acres of land it sits on in Upper Hill. The property is valued at Sh 2.8 billion but Mategwa and his cronies have decided to sell it secretly for Sh 1.8 billion and pocket the Sh 1 billion difference.

Daniel Marube. He is 72 years old and has refused to retire from Cooperative Alliance of Kenya, an organization that he runs from his bedroom or dingy pubs in Nairobi West as his personal property. The CAK has never held an AGM in 20 years and industry players call him ‘Mugabe of Saccos’.

He is bosom buddies with cooperatives commissioner David Obonyo whom he sits with in the board of Coop Bank and has turned a blind eye in all the illegalities going on at CAK. Marube made his first million when he was added as a member of coffee debt write off where he registered fake cooperatives whie working at Coopeartive bank and received money meant for poor farmers.

It is how he purchased his 30 acres of Land in Ngong. The same land is currently being subdivided and he has allotted 12 acres to his new 28 year old Kikuyu girlfriend Felistas Wangui, ignoring his own children. Wangui, who is aware the old man is crazy about her is in a committed relationship with a Absa Bank junior accountant.

Vincent Marangu. He is the boyfriend of Patrick Kilemi with whom they have had a homosexual relationship since their days in school. They usually meet at Alfajiri in Kilimani with other homosexuals where they drink in a dark corner and assure each other of undying love.

It’s Marangu who paid Sh 20 million so that CS Chelagui can go and benchmark on coffee farming in Columbia where the CS was also allocated shs.100 million worth of shares in Cooperative bank and registered in the name of the usual proxy of Chelugui.

Mixed in the unholy trinity is SASRA CEO Patrick Njuguna who was paid Sh 20 million by Macloud Malonzo to turn a blind eye on the ills bedeviling the giant Harambee Sacco. Njuguna used the money to buy an apartment which he has in turn leased out, for free.

Malonza runs Harambee Sacco where they take a Sh 6 billion overdraft facility every month from Cooperative bank. His wife is a branch manager at Cooperative bank Kawangware branch and recently he got paid a kickback of Sh 12 million for the sale of Harambee Sacco land in Nakuru. He inflated the price per acre by Sh 1 million. He has milked Harambee Sacco dry and used proceeds to purchase Posta buildings both in Eastleigh and Machakos.
