One of the best things that has happened to our country is that Raila Odinga is not in Addis Ababa today but right at home putting his energy and ideas on how to make the Kenya government both in the National Assembly and Senate work better for the citizens.
Here is what Raila said when he met Kenyan Senators in Nairobi:
The one good thing about Raila Odinga meeting the senators is that he was not meeting ODM senators or just those aligned to his Azimio Kenya team. Raila met senators from all political parties and I was personally happy to see people like Senator Bonny Khalwale in that meeting. These politicians want what is best for Kenya. It can’t get better than that. This meeting was not a tribal gathering. Great and let’s move it on.
Raila Odinga made statements about the Kenyan Senate being like the USA Senate where they have to approve the national budget and any bills from the US Congress. Some people say oh no we cannot follow the USA. Fine.
I live in Canada where we have the Prime Minister and Parliament and a completely useless Senate. Why? Because all the senators are appointed by the Prime Minister. They will do what the PM wants them to do.
In the USA the senators are directly elected from every state and so they are answerable to the voters. In Kenya the senators are elected which is two for every county. They have every right to oversee National Assembly decisions and particularly the national budget. There are no two ways around it. Simple as that.
At the ground level it is becoming obvious that Kenyans will not accept tribal groupings who want to capture the country for their tribes. The nation is fine together and that is the message tribalist politicians have to deal with. Good for them and good for the country.
