Raila congratulates new Tanzanian president, says it is a plus to women leadership

ODM leader Raila Odinga has congratulated the new President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan who just took of office, after the passing of John Pombe Magufuli. In a tweet on Friday morning, the ODM leader said history had been made in the East African region with Ms Suluhu Hassan’s assumption of the presidency.

”History has been made this morning in the East Africa region. Congratulations @SuluhuSamia on taking office as the first female President of Tanzania. Mama @IdaOdinga and I pray for your success in the task ahead of leading your people and enhancing ties between our nations,” the ODM leader wrote.

The soft-spoken Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Friday was sworn in as the East African country’s first female president after the sudden death of John Magufuli from an illness shrouded in mystery.

“I, Samia Suluhu Hassan, promise to be honest and obey and protect the constitution of Tanzania,” said Hassan, dressed in a black suit and red headscarf before dignitaries at a ceremony in Dar es Salaam.

The 61-year-old leader was sworn in at 10am local time.
