Police Break Silence on Albert Ojwang’s Death at Nairobi’s Central Police Station

The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a press statement addressing the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang.

The statement, released on Sunday, June 8, 2025, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, confirmed that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody.

While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall, the statement further explained. Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

NPS, however, informed the public that an independent investigation has been launched to examine the circumstances surrounding his death, reflecting the NPS’s commitment to upholding human rights and constitutional standards.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted reports circulating on social media regarding the death of a suspect allegedly in custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi,” the statement read in part.

“In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident,” it added.

“NPS reaffirms its commitment to upholding constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms,” said Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and NPS Spokesperson.

Ojwang’s family had earlier given a different account, claiming that their kin died while in police custody.

Meshack Opiyo, Albert’s father, was reduced to tears while explaining what transpired before he learnt of his son’s death.

“He was arrested and taken to Mawego police station, then later at night, he was transferred to Nairobi. The arresting police told me Albert had insulted a senior person on X,” Opiyo said.

Upon arriving at Central Police Station on Sunday, June 8, 2025, to follow up, he was informed that Albert had died from self-inflicted injuries.

Opiyo dismissed the explanation, calling it suspicious and demanding a thorough investigation.
