Negotiations for Somalia’s Admission to the EAC Kick-Off in Nairobi

Cabinet Secretary for EAC Affairs Rebecca Miano on Tuesday officially opened the negotiations between the EAC and the Federal Republic of Somalia for admission of Somalia to the East African Community (EAC) in Nairobi.

The Federal Republic of Somalia, which has been plagued by security challenges, has been yearning to join the seven-nation bloc since 2013.

”As East Africans, we’re eager to welcome our brothers and sisters from Somalia into the Community. EAC looks forward to an expanded of trade within itself as well as with other blocs. This, primarily, is because we intend to create wealth and prosperity for our people,” CS Rebecca Miano said on Tuesday.

According to the EAC Secretary General Dr. Peter Mathuku, the Nairobi negotiations will highlight to the team from Somalia the benefits of joining the EAC and the Horn of African country’s obligations as a member state.

”EAC Team will highlight to the Somali delegation, benefits, obligations and commitments of Partner States under the Treaty which will be the basis for the negotiations in good faith by both Teams,” he said.
