The Nairobi County Assembly has allocated Sh20 million in the 2026-2027 financial year budget for the construction of a monument and statue honouring the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The allocation follows last month’s approval of an amendment paving the way for the construction of the monument at the Supreme Court roundabout in Nairobi.
The proposal was initially tabled by Nairobi West MCA John Rex Omolleh, who had sought the establishment of the monument at Uhuru Park.
However, in a memorandum submitted to the Clerk of the County Assembly, the legislator proposed an amendment to relocate the monument to the Supreme Court roundabout.
The monument will recognise Mr Odinga’s immense contribution to the development and growth of Kenya, lifelong commitment to the advancement of good governance, expansion of democratic space, promotion of the rule of law, and support for infrastructure development.
The Supreme Court roundabout, located at the intersection of City Hall Way and Taifa Road in Nairobi’s Central Business District, is considered a strategic location for the monument, due to its proximity to key national institutions including the Supreme Court, Parliament Buildings, and the KICC.
Separately, the national government has officially begun construction of a Sh30 million mausoleum in honour of the former Prime Minister at his ancestral home, Kang’o ka Jaramogi, in Bondo, Siaya County.
The Ministry of Defence is overseeing the project through the KDF to ensure the mausoleum is completed within the set timeline and to the required standards.
The dual projects, the Nairobi monument and the Bondo mausoleum, reflect the national significance of Mr Odinga’s legacy and the government’s commitment to honouring leaders who have made exceptional contributions to the country.
Raila Odinga, who passed away earlier in October last year, served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government.
He was a five-time presidential candidate and a towering figure in Kenya’s struggle for multiparty democracy and constitutional reform.
The Nairobi County monument is expected to be completed before the end of the 2026-2027 financial year, while the Bondo mausoleum construction is already underway.
