So why do I feel so happy about Maranda High School? It is in my neighbourhood. That is where I was born. And then after High School from Kakamenga I got a job to teach at Nyamira Girls High School which is just next to Maranda High School.
At Nyamira Girls School they did not have a house for me so they took me to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s home which he built as the VP. It was just next to the school and it it was one of the amazing places I have ever lived in.
That was in 1979 and Jaramogi was still alive and he allowed me and another teacher to live in his house because he had another house in the home. It was a free home for us. We respected that and never messed anything up.
We used to have wars with Maranda High School when I was a student at Chianda High School. We needed to beat them in football and they were always just too much for us. I think we beat once for the then Siaya District High school cup.
In hockey where I was the captain at Chianda we just kicked their ass all the time and had to fight with Sawagongo High School and St. Mary’s Yala but our biggest war in hockey was with Kisumu High School to win the Province cup and we did that and went for the national championship in Mombasa.
In football, my good buddy and great Kenyan patriot, Harris Okong’o Arara was the greatest danger to Maranda High School team because he could run through them in a few minutes. Harris also helped me when he joined hockey because he was a very tough guy.
That is who Okong’o Arara is as a person and a Kenyan patriot after we left school.
So I feel good when I see Maranda up there for the kids to go to college where they belong.
In fact the Maranda principal when I was at Nyamira became the TSC boss after I left college and I had to choose between a job in the Auditor General Office or become a lecturer at Mombasa polytechnic where I was employed by the TSC. When he met me he told to take the teaching job and I did. He was very helpful.
