The ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative officially launches today, October 1, aiming to empower at least 20,000 Kenyan youths while addressing critical environmental challenges. This innovative program, part of the Climate Resilience Service Program (CRSP), seeks to enhance climate resilience and stimulate economic recovery through labor-intensive projects.
Water and Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya stated, “ClimateWorX is designed to create sustainable employment opportunities while rehabilitating our environment. We are committed to building a greener future for our youth.”
The initiative will operate across all 47 counties, with a target recruitment of 200,000 youths, ensuring a minimum of 1,500 jobs per county. Key activities will include the rehabilitation of the Nairobi River, tree planting, solid waste management, and housing projects.
Participants can expect to earn Ksh 500 per day, with supervisors earning Ksh 550. Payments will be made bi-weekly, allowing recruits to earn Ksh 7,000 after two weeks of work. “This flexible schedule will allow our youth to balance work and education effectively,” Tuya added.
The ClimateWorX initiative builds on the foundations of the previous Kazi Mtaani Initiative by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, enhancing its focus on sustainability and alignment with President William Ruto’s climate change agenda.
As part of a broader effort to restore the Nairobi River’s ecosystem, President Ruto has also announced plans for a fishing project, marking a renewed commitment to environmental rehabilitation.
