An alleged political pact between Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has ignited fresh tension and unease within Kenya’s opposition coalition, threatening to fracture the fragile unity of the anti-government front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo, on Thursday, publicly claimed that Gachagua had endorsed him as his preferred presidential candidate for 2027, remarks that have since unsettled key opposition figures and forced Gachagua’s allies into damage control.
Kalonzo’s declaration has sparked speculation of a behind-the-scenes deal between the two leaders. The revelation has also rattled co-principals within the United Opposition, many of whom view Gachagua’s political style as incompatible with the United Opposition’s unity and reformist agenda.
“There is a sense of betrayal and confusion. Gachagua’s politics have been divisive, and aligning with him risks alienating our base,” a senior opposition MP told HP.
Gachagua’s camp on Friday sought to downplay Kalonzo’s declaration, insisting that no formal endorsement or political deal exists between the two leaders.
Close associates of the DCP leader have described Kalonzo’s comments as “misinterpreted political banter,” aimed at fostering dialogue in the opposition.
However, the damage appears to have been done. Within the opposition, fears are mounting that Gachagua’s history of abrasive politics could become a weak link.
