The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated Justice Mohamed Abdulahi Warsame for appointment to the Supreme Court of Kenya, pending formal approval by President William Ruto.
In a statement issued by Chief Justice Martha Koome, the JSC confirmed that Justice Warsame’s name has been forwarded to the President in accordance with Article 166(1)(b) of the Constitution, which mandates the President to appoint Supreme Court judges based on the Commission’s recommendation. The appointment will be officially announced through a Gazette Notice once approved.
“I am therefore pleased to announce that the Judicial Service Commission has nominated the Honourable Mr Justice Mohamed Abdullahi Warsame for appointment to the Supreme Court of Kenya,” said Chief Justice Koome.
Justice Warsame, who has served at the Court of Appeal since 2012, brings decades of judicial experience to the apex court. Prior to his tenure at the appellate court, he served as a High Court Judge in the Commercial and Criminal Divisions and also headed the Judicial Review Division of the High Court.
A graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, Justice Warsame also holds a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Upon appointment, Justice Warsame will join Chief Justice Martha Koome, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Justice Mohammed Ibrahim, Justice Smokin Wanjala, Lady Justice Njoki Ndung’u, Justice Isaac Lenaola, and Justice William Ouko on the seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court.
He will fill the vacancy left by the late Justice Mohamed Khadhar Ibrahim, who passed away in December last year at the age of 69, just weeks before his scheduled retirement.
