Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has suspended 36 county staff members over corruption-related allegations, in what she described as part of her administration’s wider effort to entrench integrity and accountability in public service.
Speaking during a press briefing outside her office on Monday, September 8, the governor said the decision followed reports of financial malpractice among some county officers. She added that the list of suspended staff would be handed over to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigations.
Among those affected are officers working in trade, administration, liquor regulation, cashier services, solid waste management, billing, revenue collection, and Information Communication and Technology (ICT).
“Today I am here to name and shame them for stealing from the public and to hand over this case and many more to the relevant authorities, including the DCI and EACC, to have them prosecuted for their crimes,” Governor Ndeti said. “There is no room for corruption in Machakos. The suspended county staff are required to hand over to their respective chief officers and cease transacting any business on behalf of the county.”
The officials are accused of underreporting collected fees, diverting county funds, and issuing fake receipts. Some allegedly colluded with members of the public to illegally issue permits, resulting in revenue losses for the county government.
According to Governor Ndeti, the suspension will remain in force as the EACC and DCI carry out investigations, with possible disciplinary or legal measures to follow depending on the outcome.
Reaffirming her stance, she urged county staff to uphold ethical conduct in service delivery. “Integrity and stewardship are the foundation of public service. They ensure fairness, accountability, and trust between the government and the people we serve. Let us reject corruption, embrace transparency, and remain committed to serving our people with honesty,” she stated.
