Githurai Ward MCA Deonysias Mwangi Waithira has resigned from the Nairobi County Assembly, citing frustration with what he termed as systemic failure by the County Executive to deliver basic services and implement development projects.
Waithira, who was elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, confirmed his resignation in an interview with the press after submitting a letter to the Speaker of the County Assembly on Wednesday, September 17. The resignation will take effect on November 1, 2025.
In his letter, Waithira acknowledged the trust placed in him by his constituents and the UDA party but said he could no longer serve under the prevailing conditions. He described the decision as one of the most difficult in his life, pointing to what he viewed as neglect of his ward despite his repeated efforts through debates and committee work.
The outgoing MCA accused the County Executive of ignoring resolutions and delaying the rollout of key infrastructure projects in Githurai. He further lamented the absence of mechanisms to enforce Assembly resolutions and highlighted administrative inefficiencies, such as delays in releasing Ward Office funds, which he said hampered service delivery.
“These are not mere personal concerns but the sovereign aspirations of the people of Githurai Ward, expressed during public participation forums and captured in county development plans. Unfortunately, they have remained unfulfilled promises on paper,” Waithira stated.
Under Article 194(1)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya, the office of a member of a county assembly becomes vacant if the member resigns in writing to the Speaker of the Assembly.
Waithira’s resignation comes weeks after MCAs initiated plans to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing him of failing to honour campaign pledges, delaying bursary disbursement, and stalling the Ward Development Fund.
The MCA is expected to address the public in a press conference on his decision and outline his next steps.
