Gakuya, Yusuf Hassan Emerge as DCP Ticket for Nairobi Governor Race

Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Hassan earlier this week left the Jubilee Party and joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP),

Hassan formally crossed over on August 25, 2026, and was received at the DCP headquarters in Lavington by the party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

His entry into DCP has immediately triggered speculation over the party’s Nairobi gubernatorial calculations.

Sources within the party say Hassan is among the names Gachagua is considering as James Gakuya’s running mate in a DCP ticket for Nairobi Governor. Under the proposed arrangement, Gakuya would seek the governor’s seat, with Hassan lined up for the deputy governor position.

The proposed Gakuya-Hassan ticket would bring together two of the city’s influential political and commercial constituencies, the Kikuyu and Somali communities.

Gachagua is said to be weighing Hassan’s deputy bid on the strength of the two communities’ deep roots in Nairobi’s trading networks and their sizeable voter base.

The former deputy president is also banking on Hassan to help deliver the Somali vote to DCP in the 2027 contest, as the party seeks to build a broad coalition in the capital.
