Gachagua saying Kalonzo has agreed to cede all critical Nairobi County positions to GEMA does not surprise me. Kalonzo has never been a nationalist.
Whereas to support Raila alot was ceded to him and his “wakamba only” party, it is interesting that he is now willing to give everything away.
Kalonzo remained in opposition because he had no alternatives.
2007-2013 he did everything to get GEMA backing, including the anti-ICC shuttle diplomacy that killed any hopes of ever holding 2007 GEMA murder planners to account.
People say Kibaki rigged the 2007 polls but forget that it was Kalonzo who was the biggest beneficiary of that rigging, not Uhuru and not Karua.
It is Kalonzo who became the Vice President, with his then ODM kenya Party, defeated across Kenya, bagging several ministerial positions at the height of the PEV violence, with people like Mutula Kilonzo Senior becoming Justice Minister.
2013-2017 Kalonzo backed Raila but only because he lacked the money and capacity to run, having spent too much time sucking up to GEMA support that never came.
GEMA chose Uhuru, who spared no time to take Kalonzo on a chopper ride above Ukambani, asking him to point out the people from the shrubs.
2017-2022 Kalonzo pussyfooted the whole time, unsure whether to back Raila fully or not. It is only after Mudavadi rejoined Raila sometime in late 2016 that Kalonzo started showing up actively.
2022-2027 he played the ‘17-‘22 game again. You will recall that Raila moved on to form Azimio without Kalonzo, who was still trying to cobble something called “One Kenya Alliance”. Actually, it is for Kalonzo’s late re-entry that Azimio ended up having the mouthful Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition. In 2022, it is Uhuru, who had been taking care of the medical bills of Kalonzo’s sick wife, who now caged him to back Raila. Remember at some point he haf daid he will be ‘stupid’ to support Raila a third time. The turnout in Ukambani reflected Kalonzo’s flip-flopping.
Kalonzo does not mind Kenya reverting to the primitive tribalism of the Mwai Kibaki era. He was once the biggest beneficiary of a regime that chocked Kenya with primitive tribalism and crass entitlement.
What makes me happy is that a modernizing Kenya cannot be tribal; and a tribal Kenya cannot modernize. Choose wisely.
