Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed the installation of a new roof for the entire terminal building 1B, 1C and 1D at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Murkomen who received a report from a technical committee formed to assess the state of the JKIA, Moi and Wilson airports on Thursday also ordered an erection of canopies on critical walkways with immediate commissioning of the standby generators to provide primary power backup for Provision of the additional secondary backup generator to Terminals 1A, 1E and 2.
“I have directed the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to Install a new roof for the entire terminal building 1B, 1C and 1D, with proper rain harvesting, solar and other services anchorage provisions,” he stated.
Murkomen said reorganization of the internal spaces at JKIA will ensure optimum ventilation and lighting to ensure efficient passenger processing.
He also instructed replacement of all defective screening equipment at the baggage handling system with implementation of 3D technology.
Murkomen further ordered KAA to ensure implementation of various recommendations both at Wilson and Moi International Airport including rehabilitation of road surfacing, and drainage system stating that the government is committed to work with all stakeholders to improve the state of the airports .
“I received an interim report on the State of JKIA, Moi and Wilson airports, after two weeks of thorough investigation by the technical committee. Following a meeting with the Committee, and having gone through the report, I have directed the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to implement various recommendations,” he stated.
According to Murkomen the move will cement and position Kenya as an aviation hub.
“I have directed building of a canopy in the luggage handling area to protect people and luggage from adverse weather conditions,” he noted.
The Technical committee which was formed to assess the state of the airports provided recommendations to ensure smooth running of operations.
