Kalonzo’s State House Declaration Puts Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Project in a Bind

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared that he will be on the presidential ballot in 2027, signalling an increasingly difficult political contest within the opposition and complicating efforts by Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi camp to have him as the presidential candidate.

Speaking two days after he was heckled by supporters of Senator Edwin Sifuna during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, Kalonzo maintained that he would not abandon his presidential ambitions.

The former Vice President challenged his political opponents, including President William Ruto, to prepare for a contest at the ballot, insisting that he would be seeking the country’s top seat in the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna’s supporters have openly rejected suggestions that the Nairobi Senator should deputise Kalonzo in a possible opposition arrangement.

During Friday’s headquarters launch, sections of the crowd heckled Kalonzo after he declined to recognise Sifuna as an established presidential candidate.

Sifuna’s supporters have increasingly insisted that their leader must be considered for the presidency rather than being persuaded to settle for the Deputy President position.

The position places the Linda Mwananchi movement on a collision course with Kalonzo, whose latest declaration suggests little appetite for stepping aside in favour of the Nairobi Senator.
