The succession battle in Jubilee Party has widened, with the name of Muhoho Kenyatta, younger brother of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, now being floated as a possible successor to his brother.
Muhoho’s name was raised publicly on Sunday by former Nyeri Town MP and Jubilee National Executive Committee member Ngunjiri Wambugu, who has been vocal about the unfolding leadership transition.
“Muhoho Kenyatta as our next party leader?” Wambugu posed in a statement, without giving further details.
The suggestion injects a new dimension into a succession contest that had largely centred on Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
Kioni has already declared his intention to seek the party leadership, insisting that Uhuru’s successor should be elected by Jubilee delegates at a National Delegates Convention rather than installed through an internal arrangement.
Matiang’i, meanwhile, is Jubilee’s 2027 presidential candidate, and his supporters have argued that the party leader should also be the person carrying its presidential ticket into the election. The emerging contest has therefore put party leadership and the presidential ticket on the same political chessboard.
The Muhoho proposal could further complicate those calculations.
It comes as Uhuru prepares to relinquish the Jubilee leadership following a High Court ruling on the eligibility of retired presidents to hold formal positions in political parties.
For Jubilee, the question is no longer simply who takes Uhuru’s chair.
It is becoming a contest over who controls the party, its political machinery and its direction going into 2027.
