Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has turned down emissaries sent to broker a reconciliation with DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, sources close to the former head of state have revealed.
The rejection comes amid intensifying efforts by Gachagua to reach out to Kenyatta through a section of the Gikuyu Council of Elders, as part of a broader strategy to unite Mt. Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Community leaders, elders, and political figures aligned with Gachagua have been advocating for a formal truce between the two leaders, arguing that such a reconciliation is key to consolidating Mt. Kenya which remains fragmented since the 2022 elections.
Following his upheld impeachment as Deputy President, Gachagua transitioned his political operations to his Wamunyoro home.
Delegations visiting him have consistently insisted that reconciling with Uhuru Kenyatta is the only viable path to unite the region’s scattered votes.
However, sources within Uhuru’s camp say the former President has no interest in mending fences with Gachagua, citing fundamental differences in their political philosophies.
“While Uhuru Kenyatta is a respected statesman who is keen on the unity of all Kenyans, Rigathi Gachagua is a polarizing figure who has consistently perpetuated the politics of division, not only in Mt. Kenya but also across the country,” a source within the camp said.
The former President’s allies are also wary of the potential damage such an alliance could inflict on Uhuru’s political standing outside Mt Kenya.
For Gachagua’s DCP, a reconciliation with Uhuru Kenyatta would immensely boost the former Deputy President’s political profile, particularly in Mt. Kenya, where a large number of voters still listen to Kenyatta despite his reduced involvement in active politics.
The political calculus is further complicated by the fact that both leaders have already endorsed different presidential candidates for the 2027 race against President William Ruto.
Uhuru Kenyatta is backing Fred Matiang’i through the Jubilee Party, while Gachagua has thrown his weight behind Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
