Kenyan gospel singer Rachel Wandeto has died from severe burns after attackers allegedly doused her with petrol and set her ablaze in Nairobi.
Gospel singer Rachel Wandeto, who recently drew national attention after tattooing President William Ruto’s image on her body, has died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital following a brutal attack in Mwiki, Kasarani, Nairobi.
Wandeto had been admitted in critical condition after suffering extensive burn injuries, on May 16, 2026, when she was attacked by unknown assailants who doused her with petrol before setting her ablaze.
Medical personnel had been fighting to save her life after she sustained severe burns covering a large part of her body, leaving her in intensive care for several days.
She was initially rushed to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital due to the seriousness of her injuries, where she later succumbed.
Attack Linked to Viral Ruto Tattoo
The attack came just weeks after Wandeto went viral for tattooing President Ruto’s face and political slogans associated with his leadership on her chest and other parts of her body.
Rachel Waneto’s tattoos had sparked heated debate across social and political circles, with some praising her bold expression while others criticized her actions.
Preliminary investigations indicate the attackers confronted her over claims that she had received financial benefits because of her public support for the President.
According to accounts given to investigators, the assailants demanded money from her, insisting she share what she had allegedly been given.
When she said she had nothing, they reportedly poured petrol on her body and set her on fire before fleeing the scene.
Police launched investigations into the incident, with detectives pursuing leads to establish the motive and identify those responsible.
No arrests had been confirmed by the time of her death.
The case has raised fresh concerns over intolerance and the dangers faced by individuals expressing political views in a highly polarised environment.
National Outrage towards Rachel Wandeto’s Attack
Wandeto’s death has triggered widespread condemnation from leaders, civil society groups, and members of the public, who have described the attack as barbaric and inhumane.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had earlier visited her in hospital, condemning the assault and warning against growing political extremism and violence
He stated that no Kenyan should be attacked for expressing personal beliefs and assured that security agencies would bring those responsible to justice.
Rachel Wandeto’s condition had prompted calls for blood donations and support from well-wishers across the country as she fought for her life in hospital, but her injuries proved too severe.
The incident has also renewed calls for stronger measures to tackle violent crime and protect vulnerable individuals, especially women, in urban settlements.
Residents of Kasarani and surrounding areas have urged authorities to enhance security and speed up investigations, warning that delays in arresting suspects could embolden further attacks.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat said detectives are actively pursuing leads and warned that those behind the attack will be tracked down and brought to justice as investigations intensify.
The incident has also revived debate on misinformation, with reports indicating the assailants believed she was receiving financial rewards, a claim she had denied, pointing to how public narratives can quickly turn dangerous.
In one reaction, Mugambi Amathi, a popular social media user on X, said no Kenyan should lose their life because of political differences, stressing that life must always be protected regardless of affiliation.
“RIP Rachel Wandetto. May we never again lose a Kenyan because of political affiliation. No matter the differences, life must always be respected and protected. No one should ever suffer or die over politics,” read the post.
Another user described the incident as a painful reflection of how ordinary citizens are being caught up in political divisions, warning that leaders often benefit while the public suffers the consequences.
The user noted that Wandeto was not just a public figure but also a family member, a mother, daughter, wife and sister, whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
Others called for unity, urging Kenyans to reject tribalism and political extremism, saying no one deserves to suffer or die over political beliefs.

Obviously, this was a planned murder because the killers already had petrol which they poured over her whole body after following her in the streets for some time.
The real problem is that if this is the direction Kenyan politics is heading at this time where it is becoming a life and death issue for some politicians to get to State House and if the violence in political talk and meetings is not adequately addressed we could have a situation in 2027 where politicians will either win or kill the other politician who is beating them at the polls.
Once that happens we have a Somali situation in our hands where politicians have mobs and gangs to kill people for them and like in the case of Somali where every tiny group took a part of the country as theirs and uses violence to stay in power we could have a situation in Kenya where extremist politicians grab a few inches of the country and whole regions where they are the president of their villages.
Kenyans should not allow themselves to walk into that kind of nightmare because getting out of it could take several decades. Ask Somalia and Somaliland.
The viciousness of the murder tells every Kenyan what happens when politics and thuggery are mixed together as we are seeing with angry politicians who want to destroy whoever does not support them. These killings will also be within communities where everybody is supposed to support some politician and if they don’t, they will be dead in a hurry. That is the direction of politics that has to be stopped before we get inside and cannot get out. The time to do that is now
The killers of Rachel Wandeto are just terrible criminals in our country, but they are responding to a political tone of intolerance in our national politics today.
We cannot ignore that situation because that is how countries are broken up into chaos and Kenyans will always stay intact and take care of their country. That is a guarantee from our peoples and it will stay that way for the nation to thrive.
