Cracks Emerge in United Opposition as Karua Rejects Kalonzo’s Merger Plan

Martha Karua has publicly dismissed a proposal by Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka to merge the United Opposition with Azimio la Umoja.

Kalonzo, who has been pushing for a unified opposition front ahead of the 2027 general election, argued that there is no need to form a new coalition when Azimio la Umoja already exists.

He suggested the opposition that the coalition could be rebranded, possibly adopting names such as Komboa Kenya or Ukombozi, to reflect a renewed mission to “liberate the country from the current regime.”

However, Karua, the PLP leader, rejected the idea, insisting that her party will not join Azimio la Umoja.

She questions the logic of reviving what she described as “a ship that has already sunk,” insisting that the United Opposition already has a registered name and structure in place.

The disagreement exposes growing cracks within the opposition camp, which has been struggling to present a united front to face Ruto in 2027.

The rift also comes just days before a planned three-day retreat at the Coast, where opposition leaders are expected to deliberate on a framework for selecting a joint presidential flag bearer to face President William Ruto in 2027.

The United Opposition had initially planned a two-day retreat in February, but the meeting was postponed indefinitely. The upcoming session is now seen as a critical moment for the coalition to either mend internal divisions or risk further fragmentation ahead of the next election.
