Gachagua’s Attempt to Hijack Gen Z’s Niko Kadi Movement Backfires

Rigathi Gachagua has found himself at the center of a generational storm after attempting to co-opt the Gen Z-led “Niko Kadi” movement, a rallying cry born from the deadly protests of June and July 2024.

The phrase, which translates to “I have my voter’s card,” has become a symbol of defiance and civic awakening among young Kenyans who took to the streets to reject the Finance Bill and are now registering to vote. However, Gachagua’s recent attempt to claim ownership of the slogan has sparked outrage and ridicule.

Yesterday in Murang’a, Gachagua tried to position himself as the voice of youth resistance against President William Ruto by pushing the Niko Kadi movement, a performance that was met with swift rejection from the movement’s true architects.

Allan Ademba, the activist credited with popularizing “Niko Kadi,” publicly rebuked Gachagua’s attempt to align himself with their cause, saying they do not believe Gachagua is someone who can transform the country.

“I want to say this: I don’t support Rigathi Gachagua, and I don’t believe he is someone who will bring Kenya any change anytime soon,” Ademba said. “He is part of the problem that we have as a country. What he is doing now in opposing the government is good, but where was he when he was in government?”

As Deputy President, Gachagua was part of the administration accused of authorizing the use of force that left dozens dead, hundreds injured, and many abducted or disappeared, thus making him one of the marked enemies of young Kenyan voters.

Now, following his impeachment and political isolation, Gachagua has rebranded himself as a champion of justice but for the Gen Zs, the memory of tear gas, bullets, and blood is still fresh.

Gachagua’s attempt to wear the Gen Z mantle has exposed the widening gulf between Kenya’s youth and its old guard, a reminder that the revolution of “Niko Kadi” belongs to the streets, not the stage.
