Kigame Congratulates Charles Kanjama on Election as Law Society of Kenya President

Presidential hopeful Reuben Kigame has congratulated Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama following his election as President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), describing his victory as a significant moment for the legal profession and the country’s democratic future.

Kanjama was elected LSK President after garnering 3,728 votes, defeating Peter Wanyama who received 2,616 votes, and Mwaura Kabata who came third with 2,086 votes. He succeeds Faith Odhiambo.

In his congratulatory message, Kigame praised Kanjama’s leadership credentials, integrity, and commitment to constitutionalism.

“I warmly congratulate Charles Kanjama SC on his well-deserved election as President of the Law Society of Kenya. His victory is a clear demonstration of the confidence members of the Bar have in his courage, competence, and commitment to the rule of law,” Kigame said.

Kigame noted that the LSK plays a critical role as a guardian of Kenya’s democracy, particularly at a time when constitutional principles and the rights of citizens face increasing strain.

“LSK must reclaim and firmly hold its position as a fearless defender of constitutionalism and access to justice for all Kenyans. Our democracy depends on strong institutions that are willing to speak truth to power and defend the rights of the vulnerable,” he added.

He lauded Kanjama’s record of confronting state overreach, pointing to his legal challenge to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) verification process, which questioned the conduct of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“Charles Kanjama has already demonstrated that he does not retreat when democratic processes are undermined. His bold legal actions have shown a willingness to hold institutions accountable and to safeguard the integrity of our electoral and governance systems,” Kigame said.

Kigame also expressed confidence in Kanjama’s ability to strengthen governance within the LSK, restore financial discipline, and address concerns around corruption within the justice sector.

“The legal profession must be anchored on integrity and professional excellence. Under Kanjama’s leadership, I believe the LSK will elevate member welfare, counter institutional complacency, and rebuild public confidence in the justice system,” he stated.

As Chairman of the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum, Kanjama has, according to Kigame, demonstrated a practical and inclusive approach to leadership grounded in sound public policy and ethical governance.

Kigame concluded by wishing the new LSK President success in his tenure.

“I wish Charles Kanjama wisdom, strength, and courage as he assumes this important responsibility. Kenya needs a strong and independent Bar now more than ever,” he said.
