Ruto Targets Landslide Victory in 2027, Eyes 3 Million Vote Margin

President William Ruto has declared that he is targeting a landslide victory in the 2027 General Election, saying he aims to win by a margin of between two and three million votes.

Speaking at State House during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Governing Council (NGC) meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026, Ruto said lessons from past political turbulence had informed the formation of the current broad-based government, which he described as a success.

“As we talk today, we have a broad-based government arrangement. Tulikuwa na matatizo, makelele, fujo, na maandamano, na tukasema in every challenge, there is a silver lining, and there is opportunity if you look carefully. In that challenge, we decided to create an opportunity out of it,” Ruto said.

The Head of State noted that the partnership between the ruling UDA and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had proven effective, arguing that it had helped calm political temperatures and improve governance.

“Today, we have a broad-based government with our friends the ODM party, and we have agreed that this broad-based government has worked. It is said that if it is working, don’t fix it,” he added.

Ruto revealed that discussions are already underway between UDA and ODM leadership on the possibility of forming a coalition ahead of the next election. He said the goal is to avoid a narrowly contested race like the 2022 election, which he won by a margin of about 200,000 votes.

“We have agreed with the leadership of ODM to explore options and opportunities for having a coalition going into the next election. Hii election inakuja, we want to win by a margin of between two and three million. The last election we won by a margin of 200,000 votes, but this coming election, we must win by a margin of 2 to 3 million ndo tuunganishe Kenya na tutembee pamoja,” Ruto said.

Ruto’s remarks come amid shifting political alliances and growing speculation about the future of the broad-based government arrangement, which has divided the ODM party into two factions.

While some ODM leaders have embraced the partnership with the government, others have accused the party’s leadership of abandoning its opposition role. The ongoing talks between UDA and ODM are expected to shape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls, with analysts suggesting that a formal coalition could significantly alter traditional political alignments.

Ruto’s declaration signals an early start to the 2027 campaign season, as the President seeks to consolidate support across party lines and secure a decisive mandate in his bid for a second term.
