The National Police Service (NPS) has recovered two illegal AK-47 rifles that were voluntarily surrendered by residents in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
In a statement released on Saturday, the police confirmed that the firearms were handed over by two residents of Kibisioi village in Olot Sub-County. One of the rifles, fitted with a retractable butt, was loaded with 12 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, while the second rifle had a wooden butt and was recovered with an empty magazine.
Police officers secured the weapons, which are now being held pending further administrative action. The NPS lauded the move as a positive step toward peacebuilding, especially in a region often affected by banditry and inter-community conflict.
“The recovery of these weapons is a testament to the community’s growing trust in the security agencies. Voluntary disarmament remains a critical step in restoring peace, enhancing security, and promoting stability in Elgeyo Marakwet and other affected counties,” read part of the police statement.
The service further encouraged other residents still in possession of illegal firearms to follow suit, assuring them of fair treatment and protection under the law. Authorities believe that sustained collaboration between security agencies and local communities is vital to dismantling criminal networks and ending the cycle of violence in the North Rift.
The surrender comes amid ongoing security operations in the Kerio Valley, where police have intensified patrols and community engagement forums to encourage peace and development.
