The United Opposition has announced the appointment of Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, former Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), as its Spokesperson and Head of the Opposition Secretariat.
The coalition, which brings together former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, unveiled Kituyi’s appointment after a high-level meeting at the SKM Headquarters in Karen on Wednesday.
Also in attendance were key figures in the alliance, including former Cabinet Secretaries Justin Muturi, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa. In a joint statement, the leaders said the move was part of a broader strategy to consolidate their agenda and strengthen the Opposition’s role in “liberating the nation.”
“The United Opposition has appointed Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as our Spokesperson and the Head of the Opposition Secretariat,” the leaders said, pledging unity in their mission. “We are united in our patriotic duty to liberate our nation. We shall get this nation back on track together.”
Kituyi, a veteran politician and policy strategist, represented Kimilili Constituency in Parliament from 1992 to 2007 and later served as Minister for Trade and Industry in President Mwai Kibaki’s government.
Beyond Kenya, he rose to international prominence after being elected UNCTAD Secretary-General in 2013, a position he held until 2021, when he resigned to pursue the presidency. Although he launched a bid for the State House in 2022, he later withdrew to back Raila Odinga.
His appointment signals a renewed effort to build a united front ahead of the 2027 elections. The Opposition coalition is made up of six political parties: Wiper, PLP, Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP–K) led by Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party under Justin Muturi, Jubilee Party represented by its chairman Torome Saitoti with backing from Fred Matiang’i, and the Democratic Congress Party (DCP).
