Rain, Winds, and Heat: Kenya Met Warns of Shifting Weather Patterns Across Key Regions This Week

Kenyans are being urged to brace for a week of unpredictable weather as the Kenya Meteorological Department issues a fresh advisory highlighting a mix of rainfall, strong winds, and rising temperatures across various parts of the country.

In a statement released Monday, the department warned that several regions will experience shifting weather conditions that could impact transportation, agriculture, and public health. The update forecasts rainfall in the central highlands, parts of western Kenya, and sections of the Rift Valley, while coastal and northeastern regions are expected to battle high daytime temperatures and intense winds.

Nairobi, Nyeri, Embu, and Meru counties are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, especially in the evenings. Western Kenya, particularly Kakamega, Bungoma, and Kisii, will also see occasional showers, which may benefit farmers but could disrupt local travel and outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, the northeastern counties of Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera are expected to experience extreme heat, with daytime temperatures projected to soar past 36°C. This heatwave, combined with strong easterly winds, is raising concerns over possible bushfires and dehydration risks.

“Strong winds are expected in the coastal region, particularly in Lamu and Kilifi, with speeds of up to 40 km/h. Residents are advised to be cautious, especially those engaging in marine activities,” read part of the advisory.

The Kenya Met Department is encouraging the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions, hydrating regularly in hot areas, dressing appropriately for fluctuating weather, and planning travel carefully in regions expecting rain.

As climate change continues to affect weather patterns globally, this week’s forecast serves as a stark reminder of the increasing unpredictability of Kenya’s climate. Authorities are also urging farmers and local leaders to use the forecast to guide farming activities and protect livelihoods.
