Wave of School Bus Accidents Raises Alarm as MP Shah Chania Students Stranded After Naivasha Crash

A string of recent school bus accidents across Kenya has sparked public concern over student safety on the roads, with the latest incident involving students from MP Shah Chania Boys High School. The school’s bus was involved in a minor collision on Saturday night along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway at Kinungi, leaving the students stranded in Naivasha overnight.

According to reports, the accident occurred when the school bus collided with a lorry on the busy highway. Thankfully, none of the students were injured in the crash. However, the impact caused a temporary traffic disruption, forcing other vehicles to reroute. Police officers and traffic marshals were quickly deployed to the scene to manage the situation and assist in restoring the flow of vehicles.

A video shared online showed concerned students standing beside the bus in the chilly night, waiting for transport arrangements to resume their journey to Thika. The students eventually travelled back safely the following morning.

The incident is the latest in a troubling pattern. Just days earlier, 11 students from Hills Valley Academy in Ngong, Kajiado County, sustained injuries when their school bus lost control and overturned along Baboon Crescent Road. Witnesses said the bus veered off a murram road under unclear circumstances. Local residents rushed to rescue the trapped students, who were later treated at Kenswed Hospital.

Earlier in June, another school bus narrowly avoided a head-on collision along Kasarani-Mwiki Road after the driver reportedly suffered an epileptic seizure. The vehicle veered into a ditch, escaping major damage, and no students were inside at the time.

These incidents have renewed calls for stricter safety measures, including regular health screening for drivers, improved vehicle maintenance, and tighter enforcement of road safety regulations, especially for school transport. As parents grow increasingly anxious, stakeholders urge immediate action before a minor incident becomes a national tragedy.
