The legal battle over the Linda Mwananchi identity has reopened barely 48 hours before Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his allies unveil their 2027 political vehicle.
The latest complication comes from Charles Wanyonyi, who says he applied to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya on February 24, 2026, months before an application lodged by Sifuna allies Caroli Omondi, Pauline Njoroge and Faith Odhiambo on June 4.
Wanyonyi’s lawyers are now demanding that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) give priority to his application on account of its earlier filing date.
The dispute was already simmering before the latest intervention by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT).
On Wednesday, September 30, the PPDT set aside the Registrar’s decision rejecting the reservation of Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) and directed the Registrar to act on the application within seven days.
The Tribunal’s decision dealt with the dispute involving the rival Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA), leaving Wanyonyi’s earlier application outside the immediate determination.
That has effectively left the Registrar facing competing claims to a name that Sifuna’s group has spent months building into a recognisable political brand.
Linda Mwananchi group have announced October 3 as the date for unveiling their new party, with the senator having been designated the movement’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Presidential candidates also have October 15 deadline for their parties to submit details of their authorised officials ahead of 2027
