Azimio leader Raila Odinga will hold the Opposition office and be accorded a number of privileges among them addressing the National Assembly as well as the nation during public holidays.

According to reports, President Ruto who has been open to the creation of an office of the Opposition Leader has instructed his team to work hand in hand with members of the Azimio Coalition and Mr. Odinga’s people to ensure the bill is tabled in February when Parliament resumes its sittings.

In the bill, the Opposition leader’s office will have staff duly paid and facilitated by taxpayers. The holder of the office and his or her deputy will also not be prosecuted for keeping the government in check and will be protected from criminal or civil proceedings.

However, the leader of the opposition can be impeached for violation of the constitution or any other law. Raila Odinga will be the leader of the Opposition while Martha Karua will be the Deputy Opposition leader.

On Wednesday, January 11, Raila Odinga held a closed-door meeting with British High Commissioner to Kenya and disclosed that Jane Marriott hosted him at the British Mission in Nairobi where they held discussions on the situation in the country.

The UK top diplomat is among the forces that implored Odinga to take up the role.
