Fresh controversy has emerged following the chaos that broke out outside PCEA Kariobangi on Sunday, with rival political groups accusing each other of staging the disturbance during a thanksgiving event attended by former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and his deputy, Cleophas Malala.
The thanksgiving ceremony, organised after several recent by-elections, drew large crowds and created a politically charged environment. Critics now allege that the event offered an opportunity for Gachagua’s camp to dramatize confrontation and generate sympathy amid mounting political pressure.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts, confusion began shortly after Gachagua’s started speaking inside the church. Tear gas canisters were thrown into the church compound, sending women and children running for safety. Several residents claimed that the tear gas was released from a vehicle linked to Cleophas Malala—an allegation that has raised significant public concern.
These accusations, however, remain unverified, and both Gachagua and Malala have not publicly responded. Malala has previously faced criticism from opponents who accuse him of orchestrating dramatic political scenes—claims he and his party have consistently rejected.
Police officers at the scene intervened by firing in the air and using tear gas to separate rival factions and restore order. Authorities said no serious injuries were reported, though the sudden panic left congregants shaken.
The incident has highlighted rising political tensions in Nairobi neighbourhoods, where high-profile visits frequently attract rival groups and heated confrontations.
Nairobi police urged the public to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed.
“We acted swiftly to prevent escalation. Members of the public are reminded to respect the law and maintain peace,” a spokesperson said.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine who initiated the chaos and whether the disturbance was spontaneous—or part of a planned script.
