President Ruto Nominates Canon Dr. Ida Odinga as Kenya’s Ambassador to UNEP

President William Ruto has nominated educator, women’s rights advocate, and civic leader Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), headquartered in Nairobi. The appointment, which awaits approval by the National Assembly, marks a significant moment in Kenya’s diplomatic and environmental leadership.

Dr. Odinga, a seasoned educator who taught at institutions including Kenya High School, has long been recognized for her contributions to education, gender equality, and community empowerment. Her nomination is seen as a move to strengthen Kenya’s voice on global environmental issues, particularly as the host nation of UNEP.

The appointment comes amid a broader diplomatic reshuffle aimed at revitalizing Kenya’s foreign service and aligning it with regional and global priorities. As part of the changes, Ababu Namwamba has been reassigned from UNEP to serve as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, while Joash Maangi has been posted to Belgium and the European Union.

Observers view the reshuffle as a strategic effort to enhance Kenya’s engagement with key partners and reinforce its leadership in environmental diplomacy. Dr. Odinga’s nomination, in particular, has drawn widespread praise across political and civic circles.

Messages of congratulations have poured in from leaders and citizens alike, many highlighting her lifelong commitment to education and social justice. One supporter described her as the “Mother of the Earth,” reflecting hopes that her leadership will bring renewed energy to Kenya’s environmental advocacy on the global stage.

If confirmed, Dr. Odinga will represent Kenya at UNEP during a critical period for international climate action and sustainable development, positioning the country to play an even greater role in shaping global environmental policy.
