The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the recovery of an AK-47 rifle following a foiled kidnapping attempt involving a 16-year-old girl in Turkana County.
According to police reports, officers from Lorugum Police Station acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off from members of the public about a disturbance at a residence in Kaapus Location. An armed man had reportedly stormed the home and attempted to abduct the teenage girl.
Led by the station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the officers rushed to the scene. The suspect managed to evade arrest during the confrontation, but in the process, police recovered an AK-47 rifle, six rounds of ammunition, and one spent cartridge. The weapon has since been secured as an exhibit.
Authorities have launched a manhunt to ensure the suspect is apprehended and brought before the court to face charges.
In its statement on Monday, the NPS commended members of the public for their swift action in alerting the police. “The National Police Service commends members of the public for their unwavering cooperation with security agencies and urges them to continue sharing information at their nearest police post or station,” the Service said.
The incident comes just a day after another successful operation in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where a multi-agency security team recovered a firearm from a suspected bandit in Kabetwa, Tot. In that operation, officers seized an additional twelve rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and a smoke jacket. The suspect was arrested on the spot and is awaiting arraignment.
The back-to-back recoveries highlight the ongoing efforts by security agencies to crack down on illegal firearms and improve community safety, particularly in regions grappling with banditry and insecurity.
