Oyugi Magwanga Resigns as Homa Bay Deputy Governor, Citing Frustration and Marginalization

Homa Bay Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga has resigned from his position, citing frustration and deliberate obstruction by the county leadership that rendered his office ineffective.

Speaking during a news conference on Tuesday, Magwanga revealed that he had been locked out of his office since December 2025, with his official vehicles repossessed and his staff withdrawn. He described the situation as untenable, saying the Office of the Deputy Governor had been reduced to a shell.

“After deep reflection and consultations with leaders, supporters, and my family, I have resolved to resign from the office of the Deputy Governor with immediate effect,” Magwanga announced.

The resignation follows months of tension between Magwanga and Governor Gladys Wanga, which reportedly escalated during the Kasipul parliamentary by-election held on November 27, 2025.

The fallout began when Magwanga openly campaigned for independent candidate Philip Aroko, while Governor Wanga led campaigns for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Boyd Were.

Magwanga’s departure marks a significant political shift in Homa Bay County, where he had served as Wanga’s deputy since 2022. His resignation is expected to trigger political realignments ahead of the next general election.
