Octopizzo Fires Back at Critics After Announcing Kibra Parliamentary Bid, Cites Work With Late MP Ken Okoth

Renowned Kenyan rapper Octopizzo has hit back at critics questioning his decision to run for the Kibra parliamentary seat, days after officially announcing his candidacy on Monday, November 4.

The award-winning artiste, whose real name is Henry Ohanga, has received a mixed reaction online, drawing both praise and skepticism, from fans and political observers. Much of the criticism stems from perceptions that he is the latest in a line of entertainers attempting to cross over into politics.

However, in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Octopizzo reminded critics that his ties to Kibra’s political journey run deeper than many realize. He revealed that he had previously worked with the late MP Ken Okoth, assisting in his campaign efforts long before Okoth’s untimely death in 2019.

“I actually had the honour of being part of the late Ken Okoth’s campaign team. We walked that journey together to ensure he was elected,” Octopizzo said.

He dismissed suggestions that his artistic background makes him unfit for leadership, arguing that creativity and innovation are key to solving community problems.

“If your comment about me being an artist is ‘lowering the bar,’ then I’d invite you to try being an artist yourself,” he wrote. “Our people don’t just need politicians who speak. They need leaders who create, who can inspire and bring community-centred solutions.”

The rapper, who grew up in Kibra, noted that he has been actively empowering youth in the area since 2016 through a range of social initiatives. These include the Octopizzo Foundation, which uses art, music, and sports to uplift marginalised youth, and the Young Gifted & Black (YGB) collective, which supports emerging creatives in the slum.

He also runs WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programs that use football and workshops to promote better health practices, alongside juvenile prison reform and clean energy projects in Kwale and Siaya Counties.

Octopizzo’s entry into politics is likely to shake up Kibra’s political landscape as he seeks to unseat incumbent MP Peter Orero, who recently made headlines after a confrontation with journalist Larry Madowo over a traffic incident.

Whether his blend of creativity, activism, and street credibility will translate into political success remains to be seen. Still, one thing is certain: Octopizzo’s bid has reignited national conversations about youth leadership, innovation, and the evolving face of Kenyan politics.
