Nairobi is set for a major sports, entertainment and hospitality development at Railway City, with Zaria Group planning a Sh38.1 billion ($294.49 million) mixed-use complex anchored by a 10,000-seater indoor arena.
The project, backed by Dallas Mavericks President Masai Ujiri and Helios Sports & Entertainment Group, will be developed on about 6.8 hectares near Nairobi Railway Station.
The first phase will focus on the 10,000-capacity multipurpose indoor arena, designed to host basketball and other sporting events, concerts, conferences, exhibitions and cultural programmes.
The wider development will include a 140-room branded hotel, 70 serviced apartments, retail outlets, restaurants and leisure facilities. Plans also provide for a public plaza, a green pedestrian boulevard and an outdoor performance space.
An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment identifies Zaria Group as the project proponent, with its local subsidiary, Metroarena Development Company Limited, serving as the development partner.
Zaria Group and Kenya Railways Corporation signed a long-term lease for the site in April 2026, with President William Ruto witnessing the signing at State House, Nairobi.
The development is part of the wider Nairobi Railway City redevelopment, with the arena expected to serve as a new anchor for sports, entertainment, hospitality and business events in the capital.
