The Nairobi County Assembly has given the green light to the construction of a monument honouring the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at the Supreme Court roundabout in the capital.
The motion, originally proposed by Nairobi West MCA John Rex Omolleh, initially sought to erect the monument at Uhuru Park. However, in a memorandum to the Clerk of the County Assembly, Omolleh amended the proposal to relocate the site to the Supreme Court roundabout.
The Assembly approved the amendment, paving the way for the establishment of what legislators described as a lasting tribute to Mr Odinga’s decades-long service to the nation.
A Legacy of Service
According to the motion, the monument will recognise Mr Odinga’s “immense contribution to the development and growth of Kenya,” particularly his lifelong commitment to advancing good governance, expanding democratic space, promoting the rule of law, and supporting infrastructure development.
“This monument will serve as a lasting tribute to Mr Odinga’s selfless sacrifice in championing good governance, democratic space, the rule of law and development of infrastructure throughout his adult life,” the Assembly stated.
State Funeral and Burial
Mr Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80. He was accorded a State funeral befitting his status as one of Kenya’s most prominent political figures, before being laid to rest on October 19, 2025, at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County.
The former Prime Minister’s death marked the end of an era in Kenyan politics, with tributes pouring in from across the political divide and the international community.
The Supreme Court roundabout location is seen as symbolically significant, given Mr Odinga’s long association with the fight for constitutional reforms and the rule of law in Kenya.
Details regarding the design, timeline, and budget for the monument are expected to be announced in due course.
