Push for broad opposition front gains momentum as Linda Mwananchi signals alliance with United Opposition

The push to forge a broad-based opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls gathered momentum on Sunday after Linda Mwananchi leaders openly declared they would eventually join hands with the united opposition.

Linda rally in Thika was one of their best events in a while and one of the big news to come from there is that former LSK president Faith Odhiambo who was at the rally should be nominated by the group to run to be Nairobi Senator in 2027. That is a fantastic idea by any measure because Kenyans know and respect Faith Odhiambo and she will be a perfect senator in Nairobi and that will help the group to build their emerging movement towards the future.

Now here comes the problem. If Faith Odhiambo takes the Nairobi Senator job where does Edwin Sifuna go. At the Thika rally the message was that Sifuna should be the DP candidate for Kalonzo Musyoka. That would be fine, but the only problem is that some people are trying so hard to forget that the United Opposition belongs to Rigathi Gachagua who considers the group as his personal property.

For those dreaming of Sifuna as the DP candidate for Kalonzo it might help to realize that if Gachagua even allows Kalonzo to go for the presidency in case his impeachment blocks him, Gachagua will pick the DP for Kalonzo and it will not be Edwin Sifuna unless he changes his name to Edwin Kamotho and even that wouldn’t be enough.

Gachagua says grassroots consultations will guide coalition-building and governance plans

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence was a hive of activity on Thursday June 18, 2026 as what he described as extensive consultations with grassroots opinion leaders gathered momentum.

Those are Gachagua’s grassroots in a thousand cars outside his Wamunyoro State House. That is the man who will make the decisions on who runs for what office in the opposition. Edwin Sifuna is not in any of those cars and that is the problem he will have to deal with.

Other than determining who runs for the presidency and the DP, Gachagua has already stated publicly that his party will run for the senator job and that of Nairobi Governor. Nobody can blame Gachagua for making those demands on the opposition because he has some serious votes in Nairobi for sure.

On the Nairobi Senator it is possible that Gachagua can be persuaded to support Faith Odhiambo who represents a brand new development in Kenyan politics as a progressive Kenyan woman who should go for national leadership as the country moves forward. People like Faith Odhiambo are the future of Kenya because we cannot live in the past forever.

If Linda team can get Faith Odhiambo on that senate run and Gachagua keeps the opposition ticket for Nairobi Governor, it is pretty obvious he will not pick Babu Owino as the United Opposition candidate. To his credit Babu Owino has made it clear he will run as an independent candidate.

One thing Babu Owino said during an interview with the Daily Nation is that if everything is blocked for him, he will run to keep his job in Embakasi East. That would be smart because he has been a good MP for them and that is why they keep electing him.

Here is my advice to the opposition team and I know they don’t listen to me because even me I am too crazy to listen to myself. But here is the deal.

Let Martha Karua run for the presidency for the Opposition with David Maraga as the DP and they could just stun President Ruto by what they offer for the country.

I know some people are going to ask how we could expect an 80-year ex-Chief Justice to run for a DP job instead of the big one. That is the genius of this whole plan.

For the first time Kenya could have a team running for the presidency and DP while not looking at 2032 to take power. The message here from Martha Karua and David Maraga will be that they are running for office to give Kenyans the best government they can have and 2032 is not their agenda.

David Maraga has distinguished himself as one of the best Chief Justice Kenyan has had so far. If he commits to work with Martha Karua to develop the country in all areas including human rights, they can win State House in 2027.
