Kenyan travellers can now buy and activate mobile data for international trips directly through their M-PESA balances following the integration of Kwetu eSIM into the M-PESA Super App.
The new service allows travellers, tourists and business professionals to purchase digital SIM profiles covering more than 200 destinations worldwide without the need to look for physical SIM cards after landing abroad or use international debit and credit cards.
Through the Kwetu eSIM Mini App, users can browse available data packages, make payments in Kenyan shillings using their M-PESA funds and receive their eSIM profiles digitally within minutes.
The integration is designed to address some of the common challenges faced by Kenyans travelling abroad, including expensive roaming charges, foreign payment fees and the inconvenience of changing physical SIM cards at airports.
“Travelers want instant, reliable data without the friction of physical SIM swaps or complicated payment methods,” said Kevin Mwando, General Manager at Kwetu eSIM.
Mwando said travellers can purchase and configure their data packages before leaving Kenya and connect to mobile data automatically once they arrive at their destination.
The service also allows users to retain their primary Safaricom numbers for calls and SMS while using Kwetu eSIM’s partner networks for data. Travellers can choose from local, regional and global packages depending on their destination and length of stay, including regional options covering East African countries.
To access the service, users open the M-PESA Super App, navigate to the Services or Book & Travel Apps section and select Kwetu eSIM. They can then choose their destination and preferred data package before completing payment through M-PESA.
The Kwetu eSIM Mini App is now live, giving Kenyan travellers another option for staying connected when travelling outside the country.
